Talking about Brazil nuts, which are less talked about, they are moderately rich in selenium, which is essential for the proper functioning of the immune and reproductive systems.

Selenium helps prevent any damage to cells and tissues. But too many Brazilian nuts can provide your body with extra selenium, which can be dangerous for your health.

According to the National Institutes of Health, too much selenium in the body can cause problems such as nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, mood swings, hair loss, brittle nails, change in teeth color and problems with the nervous system.

In some extreme cases, it can also lead to heart attacks, heart failure, tremors and difficulty in breathing.

2. How safe is it to consume selenium?

When eaten in the right amounts, Brazil nuts have many health benefits. According to the NHS, it is safe for men aged 19 to 64 to consume 75 grams of selenium a day.

Brazil nuts are also rich in antioxidants, which are great for cognitive health and brain function. According to studies, these compounds are helpful in preventing depression in the long run. People suffering from high cholesterol can also enjoy Brazil nuts in limited quantities.

The phosphorus and magnesium present in Brazil nuts are beneficial for people suffering from anxiety or depression.
