When are platelets needed in dengue?
Ajay Kumar, posted in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, said that not every patient needs platelets after having dengue. When the level of platelets starts falling below 20 thousand then platelets need to be transfused. There are two ways to remove platelets. In the first method, platelets can be removed from the blood of one donor at a time. This is called single donor platelets (SDP). On offering one unit of SDP to the patient, the amount of platelets count increases up to 50-60 thousand. In the second method, after the blood is removed, in the Random Donor Platelets (RDP) method, platelets are taken out in the separator unit. It takes at least six hours.

There are 1.5 to 4.5 lakh platelets in the body of a healthy person. If the platelets come less than 1.5 lakhs then there is no need to panic. Keep getting the test done every 2-3 days. Get the test done till the platelet count reaches 3 lakhs.
If the platelets fall to 20 thousand or below, then platelets have to be offered. However, if there is no bleeding, then even after coming down from this, there is no need to transfuse platelets many times.
