According to a recent study published in the Journal of General Virology, it was found that curcumin can help eliminate certain viruses and protect against infection.
A study published in the Journal of General Virology showed that curcumin can inhibit transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV)—an alpha-group coronavirus that infects pigs, from infected cells. In high doses, the compound was also found to kill virus particles.
Infection with TGEV causes a disease called infectious gastroenteritis in piglets, which is characterized by diarrhoea, severe dehydration and death.
TGEV is highly contagious and is always fatal in piglets less than two weeks of age, thus posing a major threat to the global swine industry.
There is currently no approved treatment for alpha-coronavirus and although there is a vaccine for TGEV, it is not effective in preventing the spread of the virus.
To determine the potential antiviral properties of curcumin, the research team treated experimental cells with multiple concentrations of the compound, before attempting to infect them with TGEV. They found that the high concentration of curcumin reduced the number of virus particles in the cell culture.
Research suggests that curcumin affects TGEV in several ways: by integrating with viral entry to ‘inactivate’ the virus before the virus is able to directly infect the cell, and to prevent viral infection. By altering the metabolism of cells.
Dr. Lilan Xie, lead author of the study and researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Bioengineering, said, “Curcumin has a significant prevention effect on TGEV absorption step and a certain direct activation effect, suggesting that curcumin has great potential in the prevention of TGEV infection. Huh.” .

Curcumin has been shown to inhibit the replication of certain types of viruses, including dengue virus, hepatitis B and Zika virus. The compound has also been found to have several important biological effects, including antitumor, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activities.
According to Dr. Xie, curcumin was chosen for this research because of its low side effects. He said, “There are great difficulties in the prevention and control of viral diseases, especially when there are no effective vaccines.
Traditional Chinese medicine and its active ingredients are the ideal screening library for antiviral drugs because of their advantages, such as convenient acquisition and low side effects.”
Dr Xie said that, “The researchers now hope to continue their research in vivo, using an animal model to assess whether the inhibiting properties of curcumin would be observed in more complex systems.
“Further research will be needed to evaluate the inhibitory effect in vivo and explore the potential mechanism of curcumin against TGEV, which will lay the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the antiviral mechanism and application of curcumin.”
