Today is the birth anniversary of actress Shashikala, who brought a smile on everyone’s face with her acting. Sasikala died on April 4 this year at the age of 88. Sasikala made her acting debut with black and white screen, but till her last breath, she cast her magic on the audience. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Sasikala worked in one to one superhit films. In some she became the mother of the hero and in some the dreaded mother-in-law. Even though Sasikala played different characters on screen, her performance never disappeared from the eyes of the audience.
During her illustrious career, Sasikala Bimal Roy’s 1959 films ‘Sujata’, ‘Anupama’, ‘Phool Aur Patthar’, ‘Aai Milan Ki Bela’, ‘Gumrah’, ‘Waqt’ and ‘Khoobsurat’ were critically acclaimed. Sasikala had told in her interview – Noor Jahan was my first Annadata. I met him once, so I remembered him. He gave me the role of a daughter in his film. Naseem was an artist in the film, she passed away and her role was given to me. When the set of the film was standing, the search for a new artist started. During this, Aapa i.e. Noor Jahan said that there is a girl, she was found in Central. His name is Shashi. find him where is he?
“My Anna ji took me again to Shaukat Bhai. Now they wanted someone who spoke Urdu. I was number one Marathi. From where do you speak Urdu? Then Shaukat Bhai Saheb started saying – Hey, it doesn’t even know a single word of Urdu. How can I shoot? I was a little sad to hear this. Then somehow I worked in the film Zeenat. Shaukat Bhai Saheb had said that the girl who does good work will get twenty rupees.

Sasikala further says that the importance of these twenty rupees for me was that when I left Solapur and came to Mumbai, in those days I did not even have money to eat at my house. We used to go hungry for eight days. Since, I used to work in Ganesh Utsav in those days, people used to tell my father that your girl stays here one day and there on other day. That thing seemed a bit strange, so those twenty rupees meant a lot. When he got twenty rupees, he was very happy. You will not believe that with that twenty rupees we celebrated the first Diwali. With that money my father got me two saris, one of blue color and the other of pink colour. Apart from this, we also bought clothes for our brothers and sisters and we also lit firecrackers for the first time.
During that time Shaukat Bhai Saheb told my father to teach Urdu to Shashi. She will work in one of my films and will do playback for Noor Jahan Baby (Sasikala). He wanted me to be named Baby Noor Jahan, but my father said no, the name Baby Sasikala is the right one. Let us tell you that Sasikala worked in the film Zeenat but she was made to sit among the girls present in the groups of qawwals. Sasikala felt very sad about such a big role that she lost due to not knowing Urdu and decided that she would learn Urdu. After this, Sasikala not only learned Urdu, but also took knowledge of many languages including Gujarati.
