The Serpent (2021)
According to an IANS report, Sobhraj’s life is in the news once with the new OTT series ‘The Serpent’. It stars Algerian actor Tehar Rahim of French origin in the lead, who plays Sobhraj. The eight-episode series is the latest show based on Sobhraj’s life. It shows Sobhraj as a ruthless murderer.
In its second episode, there was little scope to portray him as a ‘victim of circumstances’. In the second episode, he is shown stressing that when he was 15 years old, he felt that nobody really wanted him. He was deprived of everything. Although Sobhraj is depicted as a soulless, demon-possessed person in the majority of ‘The Serpent’, the series also tries to portray his human aspect through multiple scenes.
This film has not been released yet. According to the news, three seasons of the series will be made in Hindi and English, based on Farrukh Dhondi’s research and interviews with Sobhraj. This series will stream on G5.
Me and Charles (2015)
Randeep Hooda played the lead role in coral Raman’s 2015 release Main and Charles, based on the biography of Charles. Senior police officer Amod Kanth, who was looking into the Sobhraj case, was played by Adil Hussain. It was an impressive film, but it did not do well at the box office. Director Raman said that he wanted to show the then image of Sobhraj on screen which he had publicly enjoyed.
Raman says, “I always tried to portray him on the screen the way he planned and portrayed his image to the world.” He was a vicious criminal who was educated and smart, but in the eyes of the law was on the wrong path. He thoroughly explained the value of marketing and PR as the main weapon, but his portrayal fails when one clearly takes cognizance that the police and the law of different countries have ostracized him. “
Actor Alex O’Neal, who played Sobhraj’s partner Richard Thomas in his escape from Tihar Jail, says that during research for his character, he got to know how much people around Sobhraj were affected by his association.
Sobhraj or How to be friends with a serial killer (2004)
In 2004, Finland filmmaker Jan Wellman made a documentary titled ‘Sobhraj, or how to be friends with a serial killer’. The film aroused a renewed interest in the subject at the time on how Sobhraj was arrested on September 22, 2003.
Shadow of the Cobra (1989)
The TV film is based on the book ‘The Life and Crimes of Charles Sobhraj’ by Richard Neville and Julie Clarke. This two-hour and 45-minute TV movie is divided into two episodes. The focus was on how Sobhraj attacked Western tourists in Southeast Asia during the 1970s. In this film, Pakistani-origin British actor Arta Malik played Sobhraj. He did a great job in the film. Australian actress Helen Budde played Monk Lechler, Sobhraj’s girlfriend.
