Indian cinema is very much liked all over the world. On an average 1,500 films are made in the country every year, which can be from any language. Indian cinema is one of the oldest and largest film industries in the world. In view of this achievement of Indian cinema, the National Museum of Indian Cinema has been built at Pedder Road, Mumbai.
This museum has been built by the National Council of Science Museums. Built in the historic Gulshan Mahal, this museum has cost Rs 142 crore. Through this museum, today’s generation will be able to know how films were made when the era of making films started in India.
The museum’s display showcases vintage cameras, projectors, editing and recording equipment, costumes and other items that will depict the journey of Indian cinema. In the beginning of this museum, things related to the country’s first film Raja Harishchandra have been kept, so that the audience will try to tell how the first film was made and the difficulties faced to make it.
More than three dozen enchanting galleries have been put up for exhibition, ranging from the silent era to talkies, from black and white to colour, film rolls to digital technology. The memories of the films from the silent movie era till now have been preserved in the museum. Apart from this, photographs of actors from the early stages to recent actors have also been put in the museum. At the same time, pictures of many films will be seen in the museum, in which the audience will get to see many important aspects. Through this museum, an attempt has been made to show the more than 100 years old history of Indian cinema.
Silent Mr. Pundalik’s entry
The first silent films came in the country, which were produced from 1890 to 1920. The first Marathi silent movie ‘Shri Pundalik’ was produced, which was produced by Dadasaheb Torne. After this came India’s first motion film in 1913. This was also a silent movie, whose name was Raja Harishchandra. The film was produced by Dhundiraj Govind Phadke, also known as Dadasaheb Phalke. That period was such, in which it was very difficult to take someone for the role of a woman, because at that time a lot of restrictions were imposed on women. After this, the period of making silent movies in many languages continued till 1920.
When the voice of Alam Ara buzzed
On March 14, 1931, Ardeshir Irani produced the first Indian talkie film, Alam Ara. The film also had music, dance and songs for entertainment. After this film, Irani made her first South Indian talkie film ‘Kalidas’. After these films, the first Bengali talkie was made by Chitod V. Nagaiya, whose name was ‘Jumai Shasthi’. This was the first multilingual film. In 1933 the East India Company released its first Telugu film ‘Savitri’. The film was based on a stage play ‘Mylavaram Bala Bharathi Samajam’. Bombay Talkies and Prabhat Studio were opened in 1934, under which many films were produced. After this, many films were produced in other languages till 1940.
Then came the storm of parallel cinema
The period from 1940 to 1960 was the golden age of Indian cinema. In this era there was a storm of Parallel Cinema, also known as Parallel Cinema Movement. This movement emphasized on social realism. All the films of this period were very popular, but the most talked about were ‘Dharti Ke Lal’, ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, ‘Pather Panchali’, ‘Neecha Nagar’, ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool,’ Aparajito. , ‘Awara’, ‘Shri 420’, ‘Mother India’, ‘Aurat’, ‘Ganga-Jamuna’, ‘Madhumati’, ‘Mayabazar’, ‘Charulata’. Many actors emerged in the films of this period, such as Kamal Haasan, who got a chance to debut as a child artist in the 1960 film ‘Kalathar Kannamma’.
And then love, drama, action
This era was such, in which famous screenwriters like Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar gave one of the best films to Indian cinema. These films were full of romance, crime, drama. The era of classic films ran from 1970 to 1980. Among the films that became most famous during this period, ‘Aradhana’, ‘Sachcha-Jhootha’, ‘Hathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Anand’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Dag’, Movies like ‘Deewar’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’, ‘Mr India’, ‘Tezaab’, are included. After this there was a period of new films, in which there was a lot of action. In these films, a middle class family was shown struggling with everyday life. Many such films were made in the 80’s and 90’s. The music, dance and songs of these films were completely different. These films gave Bollywood three Khans, Salman, Aamir and Shahrukh Khan. Apart from these, the heroines of this era were many crazy about the beauty of Juhi Chawla, Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi.
