‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is a female-oriented drama written and directed by Shuchi Talati. The film explores a complicated mother-daughter relationship, and their rise and fall as they age. The ‘Aide Aux Cinemas Due Monde Grant’ aims to support foreign filmmakers who want to tell unique stories and is managed by CNC and Institut Française. Apart from Push Button Studio, ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ was co-produced by Sanjay Gulati and Pooja Chauhan of ‘Crawling Angel Films’ and Claire Chasagne of ‘Dolce Vita Films’.
Speaking about the honour, Director, Suchi Talati said, “When I got the news from Claire Chasagne, our French producer, I just stared at my phone screen. Getting Ad Six Cinemas du Monde for Girls Will Be Girls was a goal of mine for years since I started writing scripts. But I always told myself – there is a lot of competition here and we might not be able to get through it. So actually getting it was kind of crazy. I shed tears and called my team to celebrate. It is a huge recognition so many incredible films have won it in the past. And of course the grant money is a huge incentive for us so that we can make the film the way we want without any creative compromises.”
Ali and Richa’s production debut
Adding his thoughts, Ali Fazal, Co-Producer and Co-Founder, Pushing Button Studios said, “Richa and I are thrilled that as new producers, we are making the right choice for our first production. We are grateful our French co-producers, Claire and Suchi of Dolce Vita Films, helped us secure this coveted grant, making our first production Indo-French.”
Claire Chassagne, owner of Dolce Vita Films in France, said, “I am very pleased that the film has been awarded Aude aux Cinemas du Monde, a very competitive fund. For me it is also a reward for my participation in the development of the film for more than 3 years. Economically, this grant will allow the film to have greater access to the international market, especially in France and Europe.
Fund production is 25% of the budget. The upper limit of the fund is up to EUR 2,50,000. The script was also selected at this year’s Jerusalem Script Lab and Berlinale Script Station. It was also presented at the recently concluded Bazaar, Gotham Week, which took place in New York this September.
