Sumit Kumar, 24, has secured the first position in the Civil Services Examination in his third attempt. Kumar has graduated in Bachelor of Technology (Civil Engineering) from IIT Bombay.
Shubham Kumar has topped the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Civil Services exam topper Shubham Kumar on Friday said that his dream of becoming an IAS officer and serving the underprivileged has come true. He said that he would focus on development of villages, employment generation and poverty alleviation in rural areas of the country. The 24-year-old Kumar topped the civil services examination in his third attempt. He could not clear the first attempt in 2018, while he was selected for the Indian Defense Accounts Service (IDAS) in the second attempt in 2019.
Kumar graduated in Bachelor of Technology (Civil Engineering) from IIT Bombay and opted for anthropology as an optional subject for the UPSC exam. Kumar, who hails from Katihar district of Bihar, is currently undergoing training at the National Academy of Defense Financial Management, Pune.
He said, “My dream was to become an IAS because it gives an opportunity to work on a big platform for the betterment of the people. It has been completed and I would love to work for the underprivileged, especially in rural areas.” Among the two siblings, Kumar’s elder sister is a scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC). Kumar said, “My father used to encourage me and help me maintain a positive attitude which helped me clear the exam.”
Jagriti Awasthi (24), who secured the second position, hails from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh and said that she would like to become an IAS and work for rural development. Apart from this, she also wants to work for women and child development. He said, “I have chosen IAS. People around me used to encourage me. I would like to work for rural areas apart from women and child development.
He did his schooling from Maharishi Vidya Mandir and did his graduation in Electrical Engineering from Maulana Azad Institute of Technology, Bhopal. Awasthi is the topper among women candidates and had chosen sociology as an optional subject. He left his job in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bhopal and prepared for the exam. He said, “After graduating in 2017, I worked in BHEL for two years. I didn’t get it in the first attempt. This was my second attempt.
Awasthi said that his brother is studying medicine in Bhopal which was the biggest source of inspiration for him. Awasthi’s father is a professor and mother is a housewife. A total of 761 candidates have qualified in the examination of which 545 are male and 216 are female and the commission has recommended their names for various civil services.
UPSC conducts civil services examinations every year in three phases which include preliminary examination, main examination and interview. Through these examinations, candidates are selected for various other services including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS).
Riya Dabi, sister of Tina Dabi, who was the topper of the Civil Services Examination in 2015, has secured 15th position in the Civil Services Examination. Tina Dabi is an IAS officer and is currently posted in her cadre state Rajasthan.
