Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute is run by the Government of Punjab. The work of this institute is to help girls from villages and semi-urban areas. Armed Forces Prepare a way to get involved. Named after Mata Bhag Kaur, who led a force of 40 Sikh fighters against the Mughals in the Battle of Muktsar in 1705, the Mohali-based institute selects only 25 girls every year and trains them for three years to pursue a career in the army. Only girls resident of Punjab can take admission in this seven year old institute. The training in the institute is absolutely free. For admission here, girls have to give an entrance test, which is considered very difficult. Every year 1,200 to 1,400 girls take part in this institute for admission. It was started for boys on the lines of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute, operated in Mohali.

23 girls got admission in defense academies
The director of the institute, Major General JS Sandhu (retd), said, the first batch of the institute passed out in 2018. Its objective is to provide platform and opportunity to girls to join the armed forces to compete and become officers. According to him, so far 23 girls of the institute have got admission in defense academies. Some of these have become officers, while many others have passed the written examination and medical examination.
