At that time there were reports that about 10 lakh posts are vacant in various departments of the central government, for which the Prime Minister has fixed a deadline of 18 months. All the recruitments under this will have to be completed within 18 months. Completion of recruitment means notification and appointment.

Prime Minister Modi had said that 10 lakh recruitments have to be done within 18 months, out of which most of the recruitments are from Group B and below, so it is the responsibility of the Staff Selection Commission to complete these recruitments. The question is, will the Staff Selection Commission get the recruitment done in 18 months? To know the answer, understand the track record of SSC.
SSC Recruitment Records: Track Record of SSC
Annual report of recruitment is published on the website of SSC. We have checked only 3 calendar years of recruitments. In the year 2020-21, SAC conducted 15 recruitment examinations, in which 42,41,728 youth took the exam. Only 5 recruitment processes were completed in 2020-21. In this 68,891 candidates were selected.
In the year 2019-20, SSC conducted 18 recruitment examinations, in which 61,54,723 candidates appeared. Out of 18 vacancies, only 3 recruitment process was completed and 14,594 candidates were selected for final appointment. At the same time, in 2018-19, SSC conducted 10 recruitment examinations, in which 36,81,155 candidates appeared. This year only 5 recruitment processes were completed, some of them from 2017-18 as well. In the years 2017-18 and 2018-19, 16,729 candidates were selected.
10 lakh jobs in 18 months
The track record of the Staff Selection Commission is very poor in terms of completion of recruitments. If SSC does not increase its speed, then within 18 months the claim of appointment will remain as a mere claim. Although the job of SSC is only to select the employees, they are appointed by the government, sometimes due to government apathy, even the selected candidates do not get appointment.
SSC GD 2018 is the most painful example of government apathy. Hundreds of SSC GD 2018 candidates are still waiting for their appointment even after clearing all the exams. A group of youth is marching on foot from Nagpur to Delhi demanding appointment from the government. These youths say that they are not being given appointment letters, they are coming from Nagpur to Delhi on foot to take their word to the government.
