Kolkata: Presidency University student organizations demand entrance exam, threaten agitation

Various student organizations in the Presidency University have threatened to launch an agitation if their demand for conducting separate entrance examinations of the institute in both arts and sciences for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is not met.

Students Federation of India affiliated to CPI(M)SFI) said in a statement that on April 26, the Presidency University (Presidency University) had submitted a memorandum in this regard to the officials. The SFI is also leading the student council. Let us tell you that Presidency University is one of the prestigious universities of Bengal and the university is dominated by leftist student organizations. The union also operates under the leadership of leftist student organizations.

SFI Presidency University unit spokesperson Debneel Paul said, “We again contacted the university authorities on Saturday, but did not get any satisfactory reply. If no positive steps are taken soon, we will be forced to launch a vigorous agitation.”

Threatened agitation for stopping the entrance examination

The opposition student organization Independent Consolidation (IC) has also submitted a memorandum to the authorities in this regard. An IC spokesperson said that discontinuing the entrance examination may compromise the academic excellence of this premier institution. A university official said, “There are no immediate plans to hold the entrance test and they are ready to hold talks with the agitating students on the matter. Let us tell you that earlier the Presidency University used to take a separate entrance exam, but this year the university is considering not to conduct a separate entrance exam. Due to this, student organizations have threatened agitation.

WBJEE has announced not to take separate exams

The ‘West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board’ (WBJEE) used to conduct entrance examinations for UG and PG courses in Presidency University and five-year evening engineering courses at Jadavpur University. However, in August last year, the board had announced that it would no longer conduct entrance exams for individual institutes, and admission to UG courses would now be on the basis of class 12th board exam results. The board said, “That Will conduct only common WBJEE exam for all students. The SFI alleges that this move amounts to interfering in the academic affairs of the institute.”
