Martyr’s Day celebrated in India
- January 30: On this day in the year 1948, Nathuram Godse shot and killed Mahatma Gandhi at Birla House. Since then, January 30 was celebrated as Martyr’s Day in India. This day is also to pay tribute to the martyrdom of great freedom fighters.
- March 23: On this day in the year 1931, Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged by the British in Lahore Jail. He was hanged at 7.33 pm, 12 hours before the scheduled time. The country has been celebrating this sacrifice of its three heroes as Martyr’s Day.
- May 19: On May 19, 1961, at Silchar station in Assam, the government mercilessly opened fire on people protesting for their mother tongue, in which 11 people died. In memory of this day, the people of Banga community living in different parts of the country have adopted it as Language Day.
- July 13: Martyrs’ Day is observed in Kashmir in memory of 22 protesters killed in 1931 firing outside the Srinagar Central Jail by Maharaja Hari Singh’s forces, while the state government observes the day as a memorial to freedom fighters who fought for independence in 1947. Celebrates as a mark of respect.
- October 21: Police Commemoration Day is celebrated all over India. The day of October 21 is dedicated to those ten policemen. Who was martyred in 1959 while protecting the country on the Indo-China border. On this day, the employees who were martyred while serving in the police are remembered and tribute is paid to them. 10 police constables were martyred in this operation.
- November 17: Odisha celebrates this day to remember the famous freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai on his death anniversary.
- November 19: People celebrate the birth anniversary of Rani Laxmibai as Martyr’s Day in different parts of the country including Jhansi. This day is celebrated to commemorate the contribution of all those killed in the 1857 rebellion.
- November 24: The Sikh community celebrates this date as Martyr’s Day, as it is the death anniversary of Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. He opposed the forced conversion of non-Muslims and was beheaded by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the year 1675.
