Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has justified the reservation in higher education. The Education Minister said that the new generation should understand the reservation for the marginalized communities as their responsibility rather than a burden. Pradhan said that after the debate in the Constituent Assembly, the founding people of the country decided to adopt affirmative action. He felt that India should provide equal opportunities to the historically disadvantaged groups. The Education Minister said these things in the program of a private coaching institute in Kota, Rajasthan.
Incidentally, the NEET-UG result has also been announced. The thing to note here is that NEET-UG topper Tanishka hails from Rajasthan. She comes under OBC (Non-Creamy Layer Category). What did the education minister say?
Dharmendra Pradhan said, ‘Who cleans your toilet? Sweepers do this? Whose feet did the Prime Minister wash at the Kumbh Mela? A cleaning worker They clean our washrooms and we call them untouchables. We have been doing this for centuries. And now that in the last 75 years we have provided them some support through affirmative action, now we are questioning that?’ In fact, during the program some students raised questions on the reservation and said that it is a loss deal for the general category students. On this the Education Minister made a statement.
The Education Minister also tried to explain the rationale behind providing reservation in the Higher Education Programme. He also emphasized how tribals have been discriminated against for centuries despite their important role in protecting the ecology. The Education Minister said, ‘Today the world is worried about climate change. We are worried about deforestation. Who protected our forests? Tribals did. We turned them back by saying that you are backward because you live in the forest. We discriminated against those who kept the world safe. Should we not take care of them by holding their hands?’
