AK 203 accord approved

The central government has given its final approval to the manufacturing agreement of over five lakh AK-203 assault rifles worth Rs 5,000 crore at Korwa in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Official sources gave this information on Saturday. The formal announcement of this big deal is expected at the summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Delhi on Monday, he said.

Sources said the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday cleared the deal. A few days ago, it was flagged off by the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC). Defense Minister gave in-principle approval for the deal

Both Russia and India had given in-principle approval for the deal during Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Moscow last year. Sources said that Uttar Pradesh is on the way to become the defense manufacturing hub of India. A source said, “This reflects the continuous transformation in defense acquisition in the journey from procurement (global) to Make in India. This effort will be done in partnership with Russia and it reflects the deepening partnership between the two countries in the defense sector.

He said that this project will provide business opportunities to various Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and other defense industries for supply of raw materials and components, which will create new employment opportunities. These 7.62 X 39mm caliber AK-203 (Assault Kalashnikov-203) rifles will replace the INSAS rifles in service three decades ago.

Strength will increase against terrorism and extremism

The AK-203 assault rifle, with an effective range of 300 meters, is lightweight, robust and an easy-to-use modern assault rifle with proven technology, sources said. These will enhance the combat capability of the troops to adequately meet the current and envisaged operational challenges.

These will enhance the operational effectiveness of the Indian Army in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. He informed that this project will be implemented by a special purpose joint venture called Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL). It is built in association with India’s erstwhile OFB-Ordnance Factory Board (now Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) and Russia’s Rosoboronexport (ROE) and Kalashnikov).
