In the current financial year till November, the production of coal has increased to 4475.4 million tonnes as against 410.55 million tonnes in the same period of 2019-20.

The government said on Wednesday that there has been a significant reduction in the import of this fuel due to increase in coal production. At the same time, the government said that all possible measures are being taken to further increase coal production in the country. The Coal Ministry said in a statement, “The government is taking all possible measures to further increase coal production in the country. Availability of additional coal will reduce the import of fossil fuels. However, trade union INTUC has said that there is a shortage of coal in captive power plants in many sectors and many power plants associated with the industry are in a state of closure. According to the union, the situation is worst in the steel and aluminum sector. However, the government has made it clear that there is no shortage of coal in the country.

Domestic production up 9 percent

Domestic production of the fuel has increased by 9.01 percent due to reforms in the coal sector. Overall, the production of coal in the current financial year till November increased to 44.75.4 million tonnes from 415.55 million tonnes in the same period of 2019-20. The statement said that the financial year 2020-21 has not been taken as the comparison year. The reason for this is that industrial production is seriously affected by the restrictions imposed for the prevention of Kovid-19 epidemic. “Despite increasing electricity demand due to increased domestic production of coal, there has been a significant reduction in the import of this fuel,” the statement said. This is 5.17 per cent higher as compared to 638.82 billion units produced in the financial year 2019-20. The power generated from imported coal was 61.78 billion units during April-November in 2019. It declined by 51.38 percent to 30.04 billion units in the same period in 2021-22. The import of non-coking coal of all levels declined by 18.36 per cent to 107.4 million tonnes during April-November in the current financial year from 1315 million tonnes in the corresponding period of 2019-20. Overall, coal imports declined by about 11.13 per cent to 14.71 million tonnes in the period under review.

There is no shortage of coal in the country

At the same time, the central government made it clear that there is no shortage of coal in thermal power plants in the country. Meanwhile, the government on Monday said the country’s dependence on imports to meet the demand for thermal coal has sharply reduced and stressed that in the next financial year, the demand will be met by Coal India, Singareni Collieries Company Ltd and captive mines. will be completed from The Power Ministry has estimated the domestic coal requirement of 727 million tonnes (MT) for coal-based power generation for 2022-23. Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi on Monday said that there is no shortage of coal in thermal power plants in the country. . In 2021 also, coal stocks in thermal power plants depleted due to evacuation issues, but enough coal was available in the country
