Maruti is bringing a new vehicle against the Tata Punch
Maruti Suzuki is a major player in the small and compact passenger vehicle segment and while the rivals are numerous, it has managed to maintain its position of leadership and strength in the Indian motor vehicle segment. While there hasn’t been much in the way of new or updated launches from the Maruti camp this year, the country’s largest carmaker may roll out a subcompact SUV based on the Baleno that could take on the soon-to-be-launched Tata Punch. .
According to a report in Live Mint, Maruti is planning to bring an SUV that could sit below the Vitara Brezza but above the S-Presso. The product will obviously be a sub four meter vehicle and is believed to be codenamed YTB.
The report further states that the vehicle will have similar design cues to the Baleno and will be built on the much-hyped Heartect platform, which promises better build standards, among other highlights. It is the same platform that underpins Maruti’s existing products like S-Presso, Ignis, Ertiga and XL6 etc.
Under the hood, the new Maruti SUV could get the same 1.2-litre petrol unit that is currently found inside the Vitara Brezza. And since Maruti has stayed away from diesel engines for some time now, it is unlikely that diesel will be available on the new vehicle as well.
It is important to note here that Maruti Suzuki has not made any comment or confirmed plans for the vehicle yet. However, speculations suggest that it may be ready for disclosure in early 2022. The battle in the sub-compact SUV space is only getting intense with time. The segment includes everything from entry-level offerings to premium options like the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kyger, while it also offers options like the Kia Sonnet, Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and even the Maruti Brezza.
