Maruti Suzuki is already making the left-hand drive version of the Jimny in India for export, which is why they are often seen on Indian roads.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny 2022
Ever since the Jimny was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020, there have been rumors about the launch of the SUV in India. According to Autocar India, Maruti Suzuki has given the green signal to the Jimny for the Indian market. This information was shared by the manufacturer at a dealer event held recently. The launch date of the Jimny is yet to be confirmed.
What has been confirmed is that Maruti Suzuki will launch a 5-door variant of the Jimny in the Indian market. Spy shots of the long wheelbase Jimny are already on the internet. Hence, Suzuki is already developing larger variants of the Jimny. The Jimny 5-door will measure 3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height. Its wheelbase will be 2,550mm. So, the length and wheelbase will be increased by 300 mm. The wheelbase is slightly longer than the Vitara Brezza.
However, this is not the case. The Jimny will use a 5-door 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which means that the Jimny will not be able to avail tax benefits. The naturally aspirated engine produces a maximum power of 102 hp and peak torque output of 138 Nm. This is the same engine that we have found on other Maruti Suzuki vehicles like Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, S-Cross, Ertiga and XL6.
What will be special in Maruti Jimny
The Jimny will also come with a 4×4 drivetrain. Transmission duties will be done by a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Having said that, we expect Maruti Suzuki to replace the 4-speed automatic gearbox with a new 6-speed torque converter unit that has just been debuted on the 2022 S-Cross.
The engine will come with 12V mild-hybrid technology. It offers torque assist function at low speeds. Hence, whenever the car comes to a halt, the engine shuts down automatically and starts automatically when the person presses the clutch. It helps in saving fuel, reducing emissions and increasing fuel efficiency.
Maruti Suzuki is already making the left-hand drive version of the Jimny in India for export, which is why they are often seen. According to Autocar sources, Maruti Suzuki has now started development of the right-hand version of the Jimny. Hence, it is likely that in future if the Jimny is successful, Maruti Suzuki will launch a three-door right-hand wheel drive variant of the Jimny in India.
