The CNG versions of the Tata Tiago and Tigor have been spotted several times during road tests in India. Recently, a CNG testing model of an Altroz was also spied on the Indian roads.
When the BS6 emission standard came into force last year, many car makers like Maruti Suzuki, VW, Renault etc. decided to discontinue their diesel engines. Meanwhile, some companies like Hyundai and Kia decided not to do so, as a major part of their sales was sourced through the diesel model. Tata Motors adopted the middle plan and discontinued its smaller diesel engined vehicles, while the larger diesel engined vehicles remained on sale.
As such, the Tiago and Tigor lost their diesel variants, while the diesel engines on the Nexon and Harrier continued with the BS6 update. However, with petrol prices skyrocketing, the demand for affordable mobility in India is increasing steadily. To accomplish this, Tata Motors will very soon introduce a CNG powertrain option for some of its vehicles. The CNG versions of the Tata Tiago and Tigor have been spotted several times during road tests in India. Recently, a CNG testing model of an Altroz was also spied on the Indian roads.
Interestingly, the Tata Nexon testing model with emission testing equipment has also been spotted several times but we are not sure whether it will get a CNG variant or not.
Tiago, Tigor, and Altroz may get CNG engine
The Tiago, Tigor, and Altroz CNG will be powered by a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated, inline-3 engine that produces 86 PS and 113 Nm of torque when run on petrol. With CNG, the power production will be drastically reduced. We expect the price of the CNG variants to go up by around Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 over the same petrol trims and will only get a manual gearbox option.
The Tata Punch will be available for sale in India very soon (probably next month). So there is a chance that the manufacturer will offer a CNG option on this micro-SUV, perhaps at a later date but at the moment it is just speculation. The maker is yet to reveal any details about the powertrain options of the Punch.
It should be noted that Maruti Suzuki offers CNG option on the Alto, S-Presso, Wagon-R and Celerio, while Hyundai offers it on the Santro, i10 Nios and Aura. Tata will reportedly be the third manufacturer to offer factory-fitted CNG kits on its vehicles when the CNG model is reportedly launched in India in the coming months.
