Companies are now focusing on CNG
The demand for CNG cars was the highest in FY21 due to rising prices of petrol and diesel. These vehicles are environment friendly and more economical than ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles. Considering the growth in the sales of the CNG segment, several automakers are planning to introduce CNG variants of their popular models including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Honda Cars India and Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
The domestic carmaker is currently testing the CNG versions of the Tiago hatchback, Tigor sedan, Altroz premium hatchback and the Nexon compact SUV. All four models will be offered with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a CNG kit. Compared to its regular petrol counterparts, the upcoming CNG variant is expected to cost around Rs 40,000 – Rs 50,000 premium. The new Tata CNG cars are reported to be launched before the end of 2021.
Maruti Suzuki will soon introduce CNG variants of Swift hatchback, DZire compact sedan and Vitara Brezza compact SUV. While the Swift and DZire CNG are expected to arrive by the end of 2021, the Vitara Brezza CNG could be offered with the new generation model. The powertrain system of the Maruti Swift and DZire CNG will include a 1.2-litre DualJet K12C petrol engine with a factory fitted CNG kit that will churn out 70bhp. The Maruti Vitara Brezza CNG will come with 1.5L K15B petrol and a factory-fitted CNG kit, which will offer 91bhp.
The Honda Amaze CNG, which was recently spied testing, is likely to be offered with a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol engine and a CNG kit. Its power figure may be different from the standard petrol version. It is expected to be launched in the coming months.
The Japanese automaker is testing the Toyota Innova Crysta CNG model in the country. It is likely to come with a 2.7-litre petrol engine and a factory fitted CNG kit. To do transmission duties, the model will get a 5-speed manual gearbox. It may hit the streets in the coming months.
